Extending a Russian Visa — When Possible and How to Apply

Extending a Russian visa is possible in limited circumstances. Russian law generally does not allow visa extensions, but there are exceptions for force majeure situations.

Valid reasons for extension: illness or medical emergency, natural disasters, flight cancellations, death of a relative in Russia, or other circumstances beyond the traveler's control.

Extension process: submit an application to the local migration office (MVD) before your current visa expires. Required documents: passport, current visa, proof of circumstances, medical certificates if applicable.

Processing time: 1–20 business days depending on the region and circumstances. During processing, your stay is considered legal.

Important: overstaying a visa without applying for extension results in fines, deportation, and potential entry bans (3–10 years depending on the duration of overstay).

Alternative to extension: exit Russia before visa expiration and apply for a new visa. For frequent travelers, consider a multiple-entry business visa valid for 1–3 years.
